An outlier is a value that is very different from other values in a data set.
Take a look at this set of grades from your last quiz!

Let's examine what it does to the class averages. |

As you see, the student who failed to study, changed the class average from excellent 92% to good 88%. These outliers are sometimes dropped from the data because they affect the results more dramatically than one piece of data should.
