An outlier is a value that is very different from other values in a data set.
Take a look at this set of grades from your last quiz!

The 40% is very different from the rest of the class.
Let's examine what it does to the class averages.

As you see, the student who failed to study, changed the class average from excellent 92% to good 88%. These outliers are sometimes dropped from the data because they affect the results more dramatically than one piece of data should.
