Equations are mathematical sentences that have an equals sign.
The equals sign shows you that the quantities on either side are equal in value.

5a + 3 = 23, when a = 4 picture of a balance
5 * 4 + 3 = 23
20 + 3 = 23
23 = 23
5a + 3 = 23, when a = 4 is TRUE
